Build a Kit

Having an emergency kit on hand can help to sustain you and your family during and after an emergency. Remember that first responders may not always be able to get to you immediately, so being self sufficient is extremely important. Remember to always use shelf-stable items, and to check your kit at least annually to make sure it is up to date.

What to Keep in Your Kit

  • Water – at least 1 gallon per person, per day for a minimum of 3 days
  • Food – non-perishable food that can be eaten without heating
  • Clothing – multiple layers to stay comfortable in changing weather
  • Radio – battery-powered, to listen to important updates
  • Flashlights or lanterns – battery-powered (candles are NOT recommended)
  • Extra batteries
  • First aid kit – including a minimum 3-day supply of prescription medications
  • Duct tape and plastic sheeting – for protection during shelter-in-place
  • Bedding – blankets and pillows
  • Personal hygiene supplies
  • Manual can opener
  • Small tool kit
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone chargers and a backup battery
  • Cash
